USA Cycling, Photo by Dave McElwaine

After two races, there is a deadlock atop the USA Cycling's Professional Mountain Bike Cross Country Tour Men's (Pro XCT) standings as Jeremiah Bishop (Harrisonburg, Va./Cannondale) and Max Plaxton (Specialized) each have 380 points. Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./Specialized) is just 40 points behind in third place.

Plaxton earned the win at the Fontana City National/Pro XCT event in Fontana, Calif., on Saturday, March 26. Bishop placed second and Sam Schultz (Missoula, Mont./Subaru-Trek) finished third ahead of Wells andJeremy Horgan-Kobelski(Boulder, Colo./Subaru-Trek) in fourth and fifth, respectively.

"I’m just trying to find my pacing” said Plaxton. “Other years I’ve gone out hard and faded the last couple laps. Now I’m trying to make my last couple of laps strong. Today I just punched it near the top of the climb on the third lap.”

On the women's side Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./Luna Pro) and Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory), who is returning from a hip injury, placed second and third in Fontana behind winner Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team).

Pendrel rode with Gould for a lap before pulling away from the pack on the long, arduous climb.

"The course was in awesome condition. They had some rain. The first it's nice to know you have legs. It's okay to feel good in training, but it's nice to test it out," Pendrel said.

In the Women's Pro XCT standings, Gould leads Davison by 20 points after two races. Emily Batty (Subaru-Trek),Chloe Forsman (BMC MTB Development Team/Tucson, Ariz.) and Krista Park (Cannondale-NoTubes/Madison, S.D.) round out the top five.

Complete results from the Fontana City National/Pro XCT can be found here.

Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash./BMC MTB Development Team) is the top Men's U23 rider in the overall standings as his 190 points place tenth after finishing 12th in Fontana. On the women's side, Lydia Tanner(Bozeman, Mont.) is the top U23 rider with 160 points in 12th place after riding to a 16th-place result on Saturday.

Specialized USA Factory Racing climbed out of a tie for fifth to take a 10-point lead over last week's leader, Subaru-Trek, in USA Cycling's 2011 Pro XCT team standings. Luna Pro moved up one spot to third ahead of BMC MTB Development Team, which fell from second to fourth.

Top Young Cyclists Gather at Cedar Mountain, NC, June 21- 26, 2010.

The 2010 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Summer Camp will welcome some of the nation’s most promising and enthusiastic young mountainbikers to Cedar Mountain, North Carolina, June 21-26.

“USA Cycling’s mountain bike summer camps have become a great way for young cyclists to get into the USA Cycling pipeline,” says Andy Johnston, camp director and former professional rider. “The camp’s program is a long-standing development tool for identifying junior and U-23 athletes destined for the pro ranks and ultimately the Olympics,” he continues. “It’s also a great opportunity for young riders who want to learn the art of riding fast!”

Campers will be exposed to a range of topics including: preparing for your race, the mental game of racing, equipment selection, optimized nutrition, skills used on the World Cup circuit, the planning and execution of a training plan, and more!

The camp is centered on accomplishing goals in a safe, fun, and engaging environment. It is a fantastic opportunity for athletes to meet friends, extend networks and outlets for finding information, and have fun while pursuing personal goals. It’s important to note, that not every athlete will be focused on competition goals or becoming a professional racer, but everyone will have a shared desire to have fun while learning skills and participating in the sport and recreational activity they enjoy.

The camp is strategically located in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina, to access both the Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest – the region’s sweetest singletrack destinations. These trail riding opportunities are second to none, and offer diverse and challenging terrain for skill development. Lodging and activities will be based out of the Terra Nova Center.

Lead by Andy Johnston, the 2010 camp staff will be comprised of Andy Applegate, Jeremiah Bishop, Shey Lindner. Ride leaders Cory Rimmer and Wes Lamberson and other guest instructors will round out the fun.

Johnston is a Level II USAC coach and has managed the camp for several years, and is also manager of CycleYouth, a team dedicated to nurturing talented young riders. Applegate is a Level I USAC coach and a CTS coach. Appelegate has years of experience as a talented cross racer and Masters National Champion on the road.

Competition Gets Deep for 2009 Event

Fayetteville, Tennessee - Dirt, Sweat and Gears race promoters announced today that Jeremiah Bishop will make the journey from the Virginia Hills to test the mettle of the heavy hitters of the endurance world. "The competition is going to be great and it's going to be an adventure," said Bishop.

Returning 2008 DSG champion and MonaVie-Cannondale.com teammate Tinker Juarez promises to give Bishop a solid run for the money. And with the likes of Josh Tostado, Harlan Price and Brandon Draugelis the men's solo race will be a battle royale.

An event record-high $11,000 pro purse will be up for grabs, with $1500 going to first place in the men's, women's and single speed open categories. The now legendary Schwag-O-Rama will be in full swing for the third year with $15,000 worth of complete bikes, frames, wheel sets and bike gear to be given away just for entering. Title Sponsor Moots Cycles of Steamboat has generously donated a handmade ti frame to go to one lucky soul on the night of May 9th. Each $10 donation to SORBA will be an opportunity to "Take Home a Moots." The donations will in turn help SORBA with their mission in promoting land access, trail preservation and new trail development. Talk about win-win!

The weekend's festivities will kick off Friday, May 8 with the demo trucks on site from 10-4 p.m, an autograph and question/answer session with Rebecca Rusch and Jeremiah Bishop, and a Friday night 20" wheel time trial – one bike, one lap on the infield.

"I'm stoked to check out Dirt Sweat and Gears because it's an event that's built up a great reputation as not only a great race but one with a festival atmosphere," said Bishop. "Having a good time is what this sport's all about, right?"

Dirt, Sweat and Gears - Dirt Sweat & Gears is a USAC Ultra Endurance Series 12-hour Mountain Bike Race and Festival that takes place on the weekend of May 9, 2009. Last year DSG hosted 300 racers from 31 states competing for a $10,000 cash purse and walking away with over $15,000 of schwag including complete bikes, frames, and most importantly, great memories. Bishop Ices the Competition at Iceman Cometh Challege

Jeremiah Bishop extended his late season winning streak past September, through October and into November, winning the Iceman Cometh Challenge November 8, in Traverse City, Michigan.

Bishop won the 19th annual event in a record time of 1:28:31. The victory caps off a string of recent high-profile wins including the National Ultra Endurance Series finals National Oktoberfest and the Tahoe Sierra 100. After turning on the jets in July, winning two USA National Championships - Short Track Cross Country and Marathon Mountain Bike – Bishop has been on stellar form, showing pure determination in continuing to race when many have hung it up for the year.

Here's how the Iceman played out, in Jeremiah's own words:

On the event:
"This race is like the Midwest World Championships. It was unbelievably fast. I've dreamed of doing this race since I was a kid, so it was awesome to realize that dream. And to win too, well, that's just awesome."

On the course:
"There's lots of of rolling terrain, and strategy played a lot into this race. There was a lot of drafting, so we [the lead riders] really opened it up on the fast, flowing terrain."

On the competition:
"Those boys are fast! This is post-season for me, but I was definitely a marked man from the start. The pack just wouldn't break, and we all took turns leading."

On the win:
"I had studied the course the day prior, so I knew that the last mile and a half included a fresh cut, slick singletrack. I also knew that 2,000 riders traversing the terrain would make it really slow - a perfect place to launch an attack. That's where I gave it my all, and with a log jump leading into a steep uphill, followed by another technical section... I didn't look back."
